Description:
I would like to design a plastic/silicone mould that forms an ice ball once placed inside the freezer that is 3D printable.
The ice mould needs to make a hollow ice ball. Design is variable, it can be a two piece mould that attaches two half spheres together or a single one. Creativity is key. No need for fancy renderings.

Hollow ice balls can be seen in this link:

- Practicality - does it actually work?
Don't Wants:
- Silicone based design unless absolutely necessary
- Difficult to 3D print
- Doesn't produce a hollow ice ball.

Hi Adam,
I'm still in the process of choosing. It's difficult cause there are so many good designs. However I do apologise about the wait, I understand the eagerness!
All the best

Rayeed,
Thanks for your hindsight however I've had 5 total projects, 3 of them have been paid in full. 2 of them had no entry designs, thus no one to pay to. Hope this is self-explanatory.

Topi,

I have great respect for the fact that you are considerate to other designers who can't make the deadline. By the way, 30 days is plenty of time.
However, you are inconsiderate to people who submitted to your contest on time by doing this. Part of winning contests on this community is meeting the deadline..
Are they extending soccer games in the UK when a player says he hasn't had enough time to get in the game ? I didn't win your contest, but I see that others have given a big effort to $100 payment pending, and you should be fair to them. Anyway, it's your contest not mine. I'm just barking.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for your input into this project. I understand the costs of running a project like this in the United Kingdom. Similarly, a project like this would cost a lot more respective to a lot of countries (US, France, Germany, Canada etc). However, as noted in the title, this is a competition. I'm not forcing anyone to take part in it nor am I unappreciative of anyone who willingly wants to take part in this competition. As mentioned in my previous comments, I wholeheartedly look forward to a design solution or idea to the task I posed. 3 designers messaged me asking to extend the competition because they didn't have enough time to submit a draft. As a socially and morally responsible individual, I feel compelled to allow them to take part and have a say. I hope this hasn't caused any inconvenience to the hardworking designers who have submitted/developed designs for this project.

You're kidding right ?

You've extended a contest for payment pending $100 for another 30 days ? Do you know how much this would cost you at a design firm in the UK ?

Guys,
I've extended the project because some designers emailed me asking for an extension. If you guys were waiting on a result I regret to inform you that it will take slightly longer. However, as this is the last extension possible hope to see more creative ideas!

Hi Manuel Rosso,
Even though I think ScottMacK's idea is a good one, the mechanical complexity of it makes it difficult to make/use. I would say it would not be worth the money.
一个聪明的想法围绕一个硅球milarly expands like an umbrella when pushed down and compresses when pulled. One such example could be: http://lightingballoons.com/products/53/umbrella-ball/

Thanks guys!

The inner balloon may work, and it will leave a rather big hole open, for the removal of the balloon.
To have a complete sphere I may explore the concept of ScottMacK.
There are step-by-step motors prepared for -40 C and they could be easily driven from outside the fridge and using a cable for power in. The molds (I see doing many spheres at once) will run at 100 rpm or so, for the liquid to wet the cold wall of the mold and forming crystals against it.
它是至关重要的改变the direction of rotation continuously, for instance with an alteration of the axis of rotation, as to wet uniformly the mold.
The gadget will not be very cheap to make, I expect something in the range of hundreds of dollars. Is it worth the money?

Hi guys,
Awesome designs and I've noticed many of you have brought up the idea of balloons. Balloons are fantastic however their structural rigidity is compromised during the freezing process. If maybe there would be a way to hold the balloon intact without losing its shape such as an umbrella type axis which holds the balloon structure rigid without any shrivelling. Using liquid or oil to fill up the balloon is very tedious and could lead to potential problems with leakage/hygiene/storage etc.

I agree with J.Osechas on the shrinkage problem, I believe that the balloon shouldn't be empty, I think that we need a liquid with low freezing point to get rid of the shrinkage probleme , ie. Brine

The inflatable balloon idea seems the most plausible, but something just came to mind. Wouldn't the low temperatures compress the balloon? Mainly since water expands while freezing, while the balloon's volume will shrink since it's filled with air...it just seems to me that it's what will probably happen.

I'm totally agree with the ideas of inflating balloon/ silicone inside the mold,
I think we will end up using 2 partial molds to make it easy for releasing the ica ball

Millerro: Your idea sounds very interesting and sounds innovative! However, I'm just thinking of the seam that will be present after both halves have been fused together. This halfway line might create structural weak spots and might make it visually unpleasant.

ScottMacK: I like your innovation to this project. I'm more interested in simplicity and introducing a motor would make the mould difficult to 3D print and build. I'm also curious to the fact how fast the motor might have to spin to actually create a perfect sphere inside freezing condition. Any thoughts?

Would a two piece mold be acceptable? Creating an inner lip on one half (of the ice ball) that would fit inside the other half (of the ice ball) and once frozen, dip the edge in water. Then put the halves together and freeze? The seam would surely be visible but not a big deal if the ice has to be broken for the drink.

One way I can think of is to put a small amount of water into a spherical mold which has a small battery powered motor that slowly and steadily spins the mold. A complicated mold like that can make the process much easier for the end user.

Hi guys,
Thanks for taking an interest in this project. The dimensions of the hollow ice ball should be roughly 4.5cm diameter.
Mouathel, I am trying to make a mould which would make it easier for me to make hollow ice balls because the current method is quite tedious. I created this project to see if any CadCrowd members could tap their creativity and maybe design something feasible. There are ways around this, just wanted to see what you guys come up with first.
I am a recurrent CadCrowd customer and always honour my payments. The reason I haven't pre-paid this project yet is because I want to make sure this idea is actually possible before implementing it. If a preliminary design looks good I will ensure the pre-payment is made before any further work is done.

Edgy and cool round bottle opener
I am looking to have a round bottle opener designed for me. It will be 2" in diameter and made from titanium. They will be CNC machined. I am looking for a cool kind of funky design. They will be marketed to the custom knife and firearm collecting community. Think badass or just a little weird for the design. The design picked will have a saying and my logo on it but right now, I am looking for wild designs. The included CAD file is just a starting point. It doesn't have to be perfectly round. It can be odd shaped but keep to a certain level of roundness. I have attached a 2D CAD file to give you some idea to start with. Thank you.
